First there are a few basic things to consider as an individual or together as a family.

Health:

The first thing is finding a healthy puppy! Unfortunately there are still many puppy mills that exist for profit and do not care for the health, mentally or physically of the puppy.

Never buy a puppy from a pet store! Pet stores (even the ones that claim not to buy from puppy mills) often have puppies from puppy mills and deplorable conditions. Good breeders would never consider selling to a pet store.

Look for puppies with bright eyes and no discharge. Check the nose for any type of nasal discharge, clear discharge can be normal but yellow or green discharge or lots of sneezing is not.

Check for a correct bite. The teeth and incisors (the small teeth in front) should barely scissor and overlap. Avoid puppies with severe over-bite or under-bites as this may cause pain and problems in the future. Gums should be pink, pale gums can indicate parasites.

Skin should be healthy and well furred, watch for patches of dryness or lack of fur.

Puppies should be bright and full of energy!

Age:

What age of puppy will acclimate best into your lifestyle?

Breeder or Shelter/Rescue:

Breeders can often supply you with the paperwork you need for conformation or breeding. Breeders (the good ones) are also breeding for specific things like workability and sociability and they know what homes their puppies will do best in. Just make sure to find a reputable breeder and visit his/her facility and make sure to get references.

Shelters can offer a variety of puppies from known mixed breeds (the heritage of mom and dad is know) to unknown mixed breeds (dad’s breed may be a surprise) to pure breed pups! These puppies often need a second chance or a first chance at a good life. I love saving shelter puppies.

Rescues are wonderful and can assist you in finding a puppy of a certain breed that you have in mind, or help you and your family find the puppy with the right temperament for your family. I love the devotion, love and knowledge of rescues!

Training:

The good news is that ALL puppies need training, no matter if they are male or female, mixed breed or purebred, and no matter where they came from!

This is good news because puppies are a blank sheet, with the right type of dog training we can mold behaviors and guide our new puppy into doing basically whatever we desire!

Positive reinforcement and building a bond with your new puppy is the most important aspect to your new lives together. With patience and training you will have a dog that you love for a lifetime!
